The Physiognomy of Meaning is the resulting monograph of a year-long research project compiling 300 visual and testimonial statements of faculty and students of a Faculty of Medicine in a Latin American capital city in 2014. Based on the vision of philosopher Cristóbal Holzapfel, the work offers an invitation to observe and reflect on the meaning of choosing a professional path in the field of health.
The work delves into an interior universe, both physically and emotionally. In order to create each interior portrait, the participants were submitted to medical examinations for an artistic rather than diagnostic purpose, exploring the eyes, saliva, blood cells, and arteries. The testimonial questions related to notions of meaning, limits, non-sense and bonds encountered in one's academic career.
A language of repetition was used to articulate a quasi-scientific result without the need to reach concrete conclusions. Crucial to the process of developing this work was the intention of surprising and winning-over the participants, both during the actual creative process and through the final work that emerges.
This book proposes to bring to light the multiple meanings that students and faculty within the field of health care attribute to their respective careers, to create a moment of reflection both at an individual and institutional level, as well as to make manifest the power of artistic practice through the work of self-reflection.
The Phisiognomy of Meaning was commissioned by the Center for Humanities, Faculty of Medicine, Universidad del Desarrollo-Clínica Alemana, Santiago, Chile, for the 2014 version of the Buscando Sentido Project, a yearly project inviting a visual artist and a humanities expert to collaborate on developing a work about the identity of the Faculty.
La Fisonomía del Sentido, monografía de una investigación de un año, presenta un retrato visual y testimonial de 300 estudiantes y docentes de una Facultad de Medicina en una capital latinoamericana en 2014. Este libro invita observar y reflexionar sobre el sentido de haber elegido un camino profesional de la Salud, a partir de la mirada del filósofo Cristóbal Holzapfel.
La obra busca entrar a un universo interior, tanto física como emocionalmente. Para crear el retrato interior, los participantes se sometieron a exámenes médicos con una finalidad artística y no diagnóstica, explorando los ojos, la saliva, el sangre y las arterias. Las preguntas testimoniales se centraron en los conceptos del sentido, los límites, el sin-sentido, y los vínculos encontrados en esta carrera académica.
Un lenguaje de repetición fue utilizada para argumentar algo casi-científico, sin la necesidad de llegar a conclusiones concretas. Parte fundamental del proceso de elaboración de este trabajo fue la intención de sorprender y encantar a los participantes, tanto en el proceso de creación como en la obra final que nace.
El libro intenta evidenciar los múltiples sentidos que estudiantes y docentes en el área de la salud otorgan a sus carreras respectivas, crear una instancia de reflexión tanto a nivel individual como institucional, y poner de manifiesto la potencia de la práctica artística mediante un trabajo de auto-reflexión.
La Fisonomía del Sentido es un encargo por el Centro de Humanidades, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad del Desarrollo-Clínica Alemana, Santiago, Chile, para la versión 2014 del proyecto Buscando Sentido, proyecto anual que invita a un artista visual a colaborar con un experto de las humanidades para explorar la identidad de la Facultad.
